Chain Width and Specifications
BMX primarily uses wider $1/2" \times 1/8"$ chains, which feature thicker side plates. Multi-speed bikes, on the other hand, use narrower chains (such as $1/2" \times 3/32"$ or even thinner) to accommodate the shifting demands of multiple cassette cogs.
Impact and tensile strength
BMX bikes often need to withstand jumps and landings, street grinding, and sudden bursts of pedaling.
